A process of consultation with clinicians preceded the design work. This activity was followed by an evaluation of options for locking the spinal-needle.

Materials and techniques to ensure visibility of spinal fluid flashback and security of handling were selected. Throughout there was extensive use of 3-D solid modelling for evaluation of mechanical concepts, ergonomics and appearance design. 3-D solid modelling was used to investigate and control precise tolerances and fits.

Soft tools were manufactured using rapid tooling techniques to allow product to be quickly manufactured for use in clinical trials. In the final development stages 3D data files were downloaded directly to the toolmaker to facilitate manufacture of production mould tools.
