Previous coin operated public payphone caseworks had been manufactured from deep drawn stainless steel, a process which is costly and imprecise. As part of the design study we were commissioned to investigate alternative materials and manufacturing techniques to increase dimensional accuracy and reduce cost without compromising vandal resistance.
A precision die casting was used to create a modular chassis which would be common to all product variants. The chassis can be populated with a variety of electro mechanical components to cater for the different methods of payment. The chassis is clad with 3 mm thick stainless steel plate giving the resultant composite construction enormous strength and durability.
